Day 10 – 18 Feb 2012

Distance: 75 km

Time: 3:48

Terrain: Flat, with a few small hills.

Roads: Unfortunately, I’ll have to stick to the I-10 the whole way from Tucson to Laz Cruces (440 km). There is no other option.

Scenery: Mountains in the far, desert and a lot of traffic.

This day started slow. A massive waffle breakfast turned into a massive waffle breakfast/lunch. Because of a little issue I had to take care of online I stayed at the Roadrunner Hostel i Tuscon till 12:30. It wasn’t hard to figure out there wasn’t going to be a 115 km ride this day.

Getting in and out of a big city is a time consuming procedure, it’s so much easier riding in the desert – one road, one direction. Anyway , finally I was out and the ride among trucks and speeding pick ups and kept going until I reached Benson. Great place to eat I though (REB’S CAFE is great!) and it turned out to be a great place to sleep as well.

Waking up with ice all over my gear wasn’t a great surprise, but it got warm about an hour after sunrise.

Kindest guy in Arizona

I stopped for lunch just outside Tucson at a small taco place next to the road. Daniel Munyon (not sure about the spelling) was there with his son David and we talked for a while. Then he when to pay for his food and came back and gave me this.

If anything happened along my ride I should call him and he would help me out. And then he said he had paid for my food as well.

Amazing. I feel so grateful to people that choose to be that generous to total strangers. It take a lot of…something…to do what he did. It’s not about the money, it’s the effort of wanting to help out.

Thank you! I’ll pay it forward, I promise.

Cervelo P3 Ultegra 2012 / Cervelo P2 Ultegra 2012

ANNONS ANNONS ANNONS ANNONS ANNONS

Cervelo P3 Ultegra 2012 – 28 000 kr (butikspris 35 999 kr)

Storlekar: 51 cm, 54 cm, 56 cm

Cervelo P2 Ultegra 2012 – 23 500 kr (butikspris 28 999 kr)

Storlekar: 51 cm, 54 cm, 56 cm

Day 9 – 16 Feb 2012

Distance: 105 km

Time: 4:49

Terrain: Flat/hilly (50/50) Elevation: 1000 m

Roads: Great roads, but no shoulder to ride on most of the day. No heavy traffic. On the last 20 km, coming in to Tucson the shoulder was a mess.

Scenery: Mountains (with snow!) and straight, straight roads.

What a day. I did one those things a smart person wouldn’t do, I put off lunch for another 5 km about five or six times. If that road side diner wouldn’t have been where it was I’d been chewing my fingers.

Between Sells and Three Point there wasn’t much civilization, the road workers were my best mates today. Better than nothing.

In Tucson I checked in to a hostel called Roadrunner and it’s pretty much all I need. It’s only me and two other dudes in an eight bed dorm, so it’ll be a nice and quite night.

I’m sitting at Barrio Brewing Co now and eating. First I ate their Reuben’s burger. Great stuff. Then I ate a Carne Asada. Great stuff. Then the chief was so impressed he made me this burger for free.

I left the plate like this.

If I didn’t do well today I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

Now it 22:05 and I need to sleep.

Kontakt

Goood mooorning

Oatmeal, almonds, sunflower kernels, apple, cinnamon and a little salt…ten minutes after waking up from a nine hour sleep. God damn, it’s good having it like this.

Tucson is within reach today, there I’ll stay at a hostel and probably rest for one day. Surely I deserve it.

Day 8 – 15 Feb 2012

Distance: 107 km

Time: 5:18

Terrain: Flat/hilly (50/50)

Roads: Great roads, but no shoulder to ride on most of the day. No heavy traffic though.

Scenery: Beautiful! A lot greener (even some grass on the side of the road) then earlier days.

20120215-193256.jpg

It’s amazing what a good experience will do to your energy lever. After leaving Russell I was so energized it felt I was riding at the speed of lightning, but at the end of the day I stayed around the same I usually pull off, 20 km/h.

Two never ending hills that would have been tough mentally yesterday felt alright today, even good, perhaps great…naaah, I just say that now that I’ve had dinner and eating snacks in my sleeping bag. Going uphill for 20 km isn’t easy with this setup, but I kept a steady 18 km/h the whole way to the top. Can’t complain.

Apart from Russell, being stopped by the police (I filmed it all) and being questioned for 8 minutes was probably today’s highlight. When the female officer of native American descend asked me if the immigrants had been bothering me I though of one episode in The Chappell Show, where he’s this blind, black leader of KKK. Check it out on YouTube, it’s brilliant.

I was told earlier today to stay away from Sells, since ”the native Americans don’t like white people in general”. Therefor I’m camping out in Sells tonight. Proving people’s prejudices wrong is my mission in life. It’s so stupid, it limits so much being that narrow minded.
